First Blood is a great drama. I don't know what you thought was cheesy about it, but since a lot of its elements have become Hollywood formulas, its impact has been lessened.

Also, after it was released, Vietnam vets began to be treated a lot better. Rambo's monologue at the end was a really powerful moment. Movies like this and Uncommon Valor were a big reason for that.
