And I believe there are 20 completed books and then he passed away in the middle of #21.
This is the basis of "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World".

Hey, j/k, don't get riled.
I believe it took me two and a half years to plow through the series back in the early 90's when I lived in Little Rock. What a fascinating world O'Brien created … or should I say, recreated. I plan to reread the series in the idle hours of my declining years.
