I'd probably be showing everyone around me what was going on in the hopes that they'd advocate for me and give me space to make the call.

the timing of this couldn't have been worse, the FA's are trying to get ready for takeoff, and everyone thinks the regs regarding PED's are meant for everyone else, so they are spring loaded to just tune out the passenger and say turn it off or put it into airplane mode, they are not supposed to call the cockpit during this phase unless it's a safety issue regarding the plane or a security issue, or some sort emergency, it's just a bad time for this to have happened and a bad time to communicate your needs because of everything that's going on
