If you want to get him started on the cheap those quantum optix reels for $20 are hard to pass up. They seem to hold up pretty damn well for such a cheap reel too. The 30 and 40 sizes should do well for saltwater and the 10 & 20 are great for perch/bass/sac-au-lait
