where is the money coming from? How much does that pool costs?
With budget cuts coming, may not be the best thing to spend six figures on.
quote:
Student Body President, Andrew Mahtook, says the funding for this project is completely separate from any state appropriations.
"It doesn't touch the funding that goes into teachers salaries, funds courses, or anything like that. The funding for "lazy river" was voted on by the student body as an approved self assessment fee."
In 2011, students passed a resolution asking for a student recreation fee increase to expand the recreation center, which includes the building of the "lazy river." Professor Kevin Cope, LSU Faculty Senate President, says this shows a flaw in how colleges prioritize funds.
quote:
"That's not how the money flow works at LSU. That's now how student government money flow works. So all these kind of arguments about that and about how we're spending our money, they're totally unrelated and really don't stand up."
Cope admits the cost of the construction of the "lazy river" doesn't impact the university directly, but feels the university should set a better example.
Zero problems here. Teacher is being dishonest with this argument

What is he being dishonest about exactly?

I'm sorry, it's absurd to build a lazy river when the school is in "financial ruin". I don't care where the money is coming from and how it was decided, it's just in poor taste to make something so trivial when we are having to apparently downsize.
The way finances work at the university are very much like government. Got to spend the money to show that you need the money. That's why we end up with so much stupid crap that isn't really needed. These different departments suck up money that can be used for something that would be beneficial to the education part of the university instead of putting in new rec fields or something that is secondary.
Again, I know this money was apparently raised differently, but I still think the student government should realize the situation and define new requirements as to how the money can be used to truly help the school. By increasing fee bills to help the rec center, you take away from the ability to increase fee bills to help the school in general.

Like most things one must dig just a hair deeper...
Kevin Cope is an English professor at LSU.
Guess what department is facing major cuts due to their inability to bring in research finding?
So he's whining that the students won't support his friends? What a joke.
