Should not matter. They had already brandished guns in such a way to threaten his life. Even at the point of them entering the car, he could not be certain that they would not fire at him out of the windows as they drove away.

Article says they made him get behind the car and get on his knees.
They could have been getting ready to run over / execute him. Lethal force is 1000% justified here.
