I will never pretend to be a CPA, but he and I are thinking similarly. It's just two different jobs. Why would he be able to deduct mileage for driving between two different jobs?

As an example, let's say he works at the hospital on MWF and the drafting company on TTH. Do you think he should be able to deduct his mileage from home to the drafting office? Hell no; it's simply his commute.

Now, if he gets to the drafting office and they send him to go do work 20 miles away...deduction.

BTW...I LEARNED A LONG TIME AGO THAT A CPA IS AN AWESOME VALUE AND WORTH THEIR WEIGHT IN GOLD. IF YOU TOTAL THE TIME THAT MOST PEOPLE SPEND TRYING TO "SAVE" MONEY BY DOING THEIR OWN TAXES, THEY GENERALLY WOULD BE IN A BETTER POSITION IF THEY HAD WORKED FOR MINIMUM WAGE DURING THAT TIME AND JUST PAID A CPA TO DO WHAT HE DOES.

I'm not a CPA either but I am a senior in accounting and am in my second tax class right now. Obviously, that doesn't mean much but I'm just saying I have been studying this stuff the past two semesters. I'm pretty sure you can deduct miles from one job to another even if they are different jobs. See the link.

This isn't the same thing as driving from one job to another. Basically, almost any time you go to/from your house, the miles aren't deductible.
