I sold my house and moved out of mid-city 12 days before Katrina hit. Watching my hometown flooding and burning didn't seem real. Waiting to hear from friends and family was brutal. I can't imagine what people went thru in NOLA.
I was living in fort lauderdale, so Katrina fricked us up, too. Trees down and lost power for a week or so.

It was by far the worst part of my life. We could not get all my grandparents out in time so we decided to stay. My parents and I were going to ride it out off of Hayne Blvd. When it became a Cat 5 and did not look like it was going to change course, my mom begged me to leave them there and get out bc "if it was their time to go, she didn't want to look across the room and know I was dying with them."
I lost communication with my parents for over 20 days. It was the worst 3 weeks of my life, followed by the clean up and restarting of my life.
As bad as things were, and they were fn awful, it could have been much much worse. If the storm doesn't change tracks and skirt the coast and then hit MS there would have been the same type of damage in Jefferson Parish as Orleans and St Bernard/Plaquemines. With that type of damage in all of metro New Orleans I do not think the area would have recovered.
