I invested in a friend's business at the tune of about $25k. Got dividends back totaling about $16k in four months and thought I had hit it big.

Ended up paying that $16k back and dropping another $25k to get out of it. The only ship that won't sail is a partnership, my friends. That one rash decision set me back several years.

Always do your research. And then when you think you have it figured out, research some more.
