After watching the Shaq and Dale documentary last night, I started thinking about the other two teams that Shaq was on at LSU after the 1990 season when Chris Jackson and Stanley Roberts left. That year was always seen as the wasted season because that team was so insanely talented and did not get past the second round in the NCAA tournament. But, when you look at it, the 1991-92 team might have been even better, at least talent wise.

Here are the top 10 players on that team:

1992 LSU Basketball

C Shaquille O'Neal - JR - 7-1 294
PF Harold Boudreaux - SR - 6-9 232
SF Vernel Singleton - SR - 6-7 210
SG Mike Hansen - JR - 6-1 183
PG TJ Pugh - SR - 6-0 177

C Geert Hamminck - JR - 7-0 264
F Lenear Burns - Soph 6-7 226
F Clarence Caesar - FR - 6-7 205
G Jamie Brandon - Soph 6-4 205
G Maurice Williamson - JR 6-0 179

Shaq was a JR and was completely dominant. "Hack a Shaq" had its effect and the season was just frustrating. The team went 21-10 and 12-4 in the SEC with a ridiculous out of conference schedule against a slew of really tough teams like UNLV, Arizona, Louisville, and Duke, losing all 4 of those games.

Harold Boudreaux had a good inside/out game and was a strong PF who could shoot 3s.

Vernel Singleton was one of the best SFs that I have ever seen at LSU over the course of his career.

Mike Hansen was deadly from outside and could score very effectively.

TJ Pugh was a pretty good SR point guard.

The entire starting 5 was either JRs or SRs.

And, the bench was really good, starting with Geert Hamminck who could give Shaq a rest and also come in to provide even more size down low.

Jamie Brandon was the Illinois HS player of the year and was very talented.

Maurice Williamson rejoined the team and was a quick guard with good shooting/ball handling skills. He was the starting SG on the 1990 team.

Clarence Caesar and Lenear Burns added good front court depth.

I would LOVE to have this roster today. Yes, they played a really tough schedule, but the fact that THAT team did not peform better than it did should go down as a major disappointment in LSU sports history.

I was in high school, but I just remember the team seeming tired and worn out all season long. They never could hit their stride and it seemed that the loss to Georgia Tech two seasons earlier just left a cloud over the program. They had Shaq but could never get over the hump and really beat anyone of note.

Very talented team that never put it together. Shaq was great, but we forget that he didn't win his first NBA title until 8 years later in 2000 with the Lakers after Kobe arrived. Maybe focusing on him too much was the problem.

Also, I LOVED Dale Brown. Still do. But, his coaching ability really has to be questioned here.

The 92 team was the end of an era in LSU basketball. Just wish it could have ended stronger.

89-90 was the best team and it's not even close.

Chris, Shaq and Stanley. That was the only year they were all together. It also had Maurice Williamson and Vernel Singleton. I wanna say it was Wayne Sims' senior year too. Harold Boudreaux's first year too, I believe. Geert was there too, but he was not very good yet.

Shaq in the documentary said that the team got the big head when they noticed themselves in the Top 10. on that 1992 team.

college basketball back then was just incredible. Today's game is a shadow of what it once was.

That team was very one dimensional. Shaq is one of the best centers ever. The rest of the guys on the 1992 team were average. Brandon was solid but never lived up to his lofty expectations. The 1980 team with Macklin, Scales, Carter, Cook, Sims and Martin was a little deeper than the 1981 team but I think both were better teams (all things considered) than the 1992 team. I'd also include the 1990 and 1986 team (especially since I'd include N. Wilson) ahead of the 1992 team.

1990 team.

Shaq, CJ, Stanley, Maurice.

1992 wasn’t even close.

I'll always say 84-85 was the deepest and most talented roster LSU ever had...and they lost by 25 to Navy in the first round.
