It is very often a bartender or server who isn't being paid minimum wage doing the to-go orders. I know that isn't the customer's fault, but neither is the fact that servers are paid $2 and they still tip them. At my old work, you got more than $2.13, but it was still only $5/hour. So you were still relying on a certain percentage of your customers to tip. And you never made anywhere near what you made waiting tables.

That sucks and all but again, I should not be responsible for their salary as a consumer.

I'm not a jackass for not tipping, the model of tipping in the industry is the culprit for that low base pay. Seems really confusing to me in a business that runs on customer service, that the place of blame goes immediately to the customer instead of the actual source of blame on the business itself.

Tipping by definition is optional. Whoever came up with the whole scam of you're a bad guy if you don't tip everyone you meet in life, is a genius and a piece of shite.

At this point you should look at it as the cheaper option to pay part of their salary. If America went to a full salary, like the UK, you'd see prices sky rocket as labor costs would rise. I hate the tipping game but it's a hard truth. Just like you can't raise the minimum wage a ridiculous amount and expect to pay under $10 for a burger at a fast food restaurant.

Nobody's arguing this. I personally despise the tipping industry in the US. But it is what it is. I think if you can justify tipping for a sit-down dinner (which I assume you do), there is justification for a [smaller] tip for to-go orders because those use up a regularly tipped employee, they use up kitchen space and time which increases wait times for people who are dining in, and they use additional items that the restaurant fronts money for and can't reuse (boxes, containers, bags, etc.).

I'd be all for eliminating tips, but I find it funny that the people who are also for it are people who hate tipping. The "option" they have now would be completely removed and they'd be forced.

Most servers make at least 20% overall each shift. No matter what, I always averaged between 20%-22%.. even when people stiffed me. So the only way I'd remain employed at a restaurant if they did away with tipping was if they paid me what I already make. This means every item gets a 20% increase and if you're normally a 15% tipper, you're now being forced to 'tip' more.

I'm all for it! But surprised the non-tippers are for it too.
