Offer him something none financial if he doesn't need the money: free fishing trip, plane ticket to a vacation spot, etc.

How long is the stretch? Short term Id do like $20 a day or long term something like $100 a week? Just spitballing numbers but unless he's a bum and your house is awesome- theres a solid chance Hed rather just be home, so Id compensate.
