Do you think all students should make the Dean's list? Do you think all students should get A's, even the kid that has to work twice as hard as everybody else but he can only manage a B? Should all people earn the same salary regardless of their qualifications and performance?

This is what the "sport participation trophy mentality" has created.

Grades are completely different than a varsity letter for playing a sport. I don't see how this special needs kid getting a varsity letter will effect any of them to the point their lives are changed in a negative way at all. They're going to college for sports or else it's entirely dependent on academics, but either way grades will play a role, and the numbers on their grades will tell the story, just like their performance in their sport will determine if they play anymore after HS. The letter on a jacket is just a tradition, and it has no real bearing on later life.

A student does not earn an A just for showing up to class(except for PE ) and a person does not receive a letter just for showing up to practice.

To a degree they both represent a kid working hard and being rewarded for an achievement. At that point in their lives both are very important.....later in life one is not so important.
