So I took and got the "preliminary" pass today. Unreal amount of information and countless hours of studying. Glad to have it behind me.
My question to the MB is, do you really think all the money and time and extra stress is worth the designation?
Those that have it, have you really gotten a lot more business simply because you have it??

I'm 75% through with it. I've asked the same questions and this is the best answer I've gotten:
The knowledge gained > the recognition.
Could I build the knowledge over time? Sure. But I'm under 30 trying to build this thing, so I need as many tools as I can get in my belt and I don't have the luxury of time to acquire them when my firm wants to see production now.
Another way I look at it... It's never going to help me lose a client, but it might very well help me win one.

I started the process and learned that without clients it means nothing. I don't think you will be able to sit in your office as the phone rings off the hook because you are a CFP.

I think it is more helpful for a young advisor's confidence in the early part of their career, and the information learned is valuable, but I have only had about 6 prospects/clients ask if I was a CFP in the last 20 years. Most of my clients don't even know what it is. I think that there are too many designations in our field, and most clients don't know the difference between them.

I've been doing this 15 years and have a nice book of business. Don't have CFP and don't believe I need it since I work for a large well known firm and have plenty of resources at my disposal. That being said...if I was an independent advisor I could see how CFP would help attract and keep clients.
