Start out with a small paint roller and a hall way. Set up in the hall way and close all the doors except the one behind you. Get the pup excited with the roller and throw it against the walls and let him go get it. Encourage him to return with the "here" command. Praise him when done right. The hall way allows him only two directions of travel "out to the roller and back to you".
