I've been to at least a hundred weddings, mostly in Alabama but also in Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida. I'd never heard of this phenomenom until this thread.
It may occur in some places in the South, but it is not a Southern thing.

it's a louisiana thing for sure. about 50% of the weddings I've been to here have had the money dances. i just cringe for them and refuse to participate.
