Old wives tale. Some friends of mine from Ireland said they had never heard this until they moved to the U.S. Both Bushmill's and Jameson's are owned by the same company.

They aren't owned by the same company anymore. Jameson is part of Irish Distillers owned by Pernod-Ricard, and Bushmills is owned by Diageo.

Also Jameson (and Power) are distilled in Ireland, while Bushmills is in Northern Ireland, so I can see some people claiming there's a Catholic/Protestant split... no clue to the truth of that. I think Powers outsells them both over there anyway.
