Habitual criminal or one-time offender? Because the purpose of imprisonment is either to remove the offender from society, punish the offender or serve as a deterrent for society as a whole.

As a deterrent, it's pretty mediocre. Punishment is hit or miss really and isn't really satisfying. Removal from society is probably the best reason, but does society benefit from the removal of one-time offenders or does is suffer?

When you violently assault someone over something so meaningless, I'd say society would benefit from his imprisonment.

Someone had previously posted that this was his second soccer related assault. He clearly wasn't deterred by his first punishment.
