I can't endorse this. You CAN plan for emergencies, you CAN plan for income variations and you CAN do 5-year, 10-year, 15-year, even 30-year planning.

While I agree that the end result is likely to be vastly different in 2050, than it looks in 2015 - but if you fail to plan, you're planning to fail.

Oh I do this, for sure. Ha. I'm just saying target numbers are mostly useless, apart from telling you an effect, of sorts, of your current saving pattern.

I have all the usual targets, but they are more yearly. Outside of basic things like having no debt, comfortable emergency fund, and a minimum of 15% toward retirement, I don't plan much. I suppose if I didn't already have those things I'd have more target numbers to hit.
