but that's what is so perplexing to me: FFXIII reeked of mass consumer appeal. are the type 0, "-2" and online games now reserved for the hardcore and the main titles scaled down for mass appeal?

Like I said, I don't understand FF anymore.

What little I read in the OP and the little I watched, it seems they've learned, but I just don't care. When it drops I'll read the review, but it is good to know that it won't be anything like XIII

I could see how you think this. Type-0 never got a western release. -2 and -3 were shitty sequels off the main XIII game and took way less effort than making a new game, they had the engine, the characters, and the basic story, look at it as a cheap way to make a dollar, because people still buy anything with FF attached to it.

I played only an hour of Type-0 on a PSP emulator and, it looks like it's going to be an epic game, with themes and visuals not usually associated with FF. There is over the top violence and tons of blood in this game, there has never been blood in a FF game.

My hope is this. Type-0 with strong sales becomes an entirely different series (maybe even not a part of FF) It would be more mature and let SqaureEnix do some stuff theme-wise they aren't comfortable doing in the main FF Series. (We get Type-1, Type-2, etc)

and the main FF numbered series XVI, XVII, etc continue the feel, settings, characters we've come to expect from the FF series.

But I'm just hoping at this point.
