I assume there is some sort of common sense ruling in that case. It sounds like the intent is designed for when the defense is trailing and the offense is trying to run out the clock. Previously the defense could have "lost" their helmet and the offense only would have been able to run off 25 seconds instead of 40.

Agreed, because this is NCAA football. I'm absolutely positive LSU won't have these rules cost them one or 2 games in a SEC. Because SEC football referee's are the best of the best of the best!
