Talked to a professor at LSU about it and he said the average student coming in today has no idea how to write at the level of a high school freshman.

I'm in my first year of teaching, and the lack of knowledge concerning writing is nothing short of astounding. These kids have no idea how to even learn, and at this point it's really too late.

One problem is that writing skills are not being taught - certainly not effectively. Teachers sending home children with writing assignments for homework with out even teaching basics in class has become quite common.
