"They can if the guy is not attracted to the girl"
This. I'm currently dealing with this situation. I'm friends with a woman I did hook up with a couple of times . We are good friends but she has flat out told me she is hoping we can become more. I wish I was attracted to her because she is cool and I do like her as a friend but I simply am not. We're friends but in the back of my mind I get the feeling she's holding out for me. She's currently dating someone yet she wants to come stay with me (she lives about an hour away) for a local event the middle of April to "hang out".
I'm recently went out with another woman who just wanted to be "friends" and we ended up dating and hooking up for 3 months until her 4 year out of state boyfriend finally moved here. This one I was and still am very attracted to but I don't think I can have.
I think the OP's statement is true if the friends have gotten physical with one another. At that point one either the guy or girl or both expect more than friendship even if it's just a friends with benefits situation.
