A friend of mine went into a civilian pilot school to get his licenses. He came out of school with $150k in debt and could only find a job as an instructor for private pilots. The challenge is building up enough flight-hours to earn a serious look from the commercial airlines. Also, median pay for beginning pilots is pretty low. You will be challenged financially for sure.
I also have a friend who is currently in flight school for the Navy. He's making around 60K plus hazard pay while getting his education for free. You can go to college and earn a degree in anything while participating in ROTC. Then, simply apply to flight school after college.
