It really isn't that easy. You have to do a worksheet, they need your income statements, the opposing party's income statement (and I suspect that will need to be subpoenaed), cost of child care, education, etc. This is usually done first, then a court date is set, and a judge makes a ruling.

I was on the receiving end of all of this and got slapped with a huge child support payment. It was a serious PITA. It took quite a lot to get the garnishments to stop, even after I won custody.
