How long of a run did they have?
90-01. (I think Cowboys came out in 90, I know they released their last record and broke up in 01 though)
Dime was playing in Damageplan when he was killed
Around 96-97 was when the wheels started falling off though. Heroin really started sinking its teeth into Phil and it showed in a lot of their live performances. You could tell he was way off his game.

Reinventing The Steel was a nice return to form. The Great Southern Trendkill soulds like a tired band just pushing the buttons to me, whereas RTS is full of awesome songs and sounds great.
And just to be clear, Tools's Aenima is one of the best rock albums ever. I just don't put them in the metal category either. Every time I hear someone call them metal I think of that interview with Adam Jones where he says being called a metal band makes his skin crawl (or something to that effect).
