And to Sid, this is the type of person I was talking about. ISIS is similar to how Christianity was 1000 years ago. But here we are talking to someone who still uses present tense language when comparing the two.

Are you saying Obama was basically telling us to give it another 1000 years?

It's providing a context in which to view ISIS now.

And that is fricking dumb. Really, really dumb. It's giving them a pass. I will not use 1000 year old actions as a prism for viewing ISIS today. And if that was Obama's goal, than he is really banking on America's stupidity for it to work.

Not that it isn't working.

Exactly the point I was coming here to make. ... Obama's "argument" is the most ridiculous statement I've seen him make thus far, and that is saying a lot.

OK. Don't get me wrong, I don't think we should give these yahoos a pass. Far from it. That's the rhetoric I'm talking about being used in this context. It's bullshite. The President isn't giving ISIS a pass. Should he have said it at all? Probably not. But to say that he's giving ISIS a pass is fricking stupid.

But again, that's the rhetoric.

I don't disagree with you on principle and I don't disagree with you that ISIS is similar to how Christianity was 1000 years ago. Note, however, that you replaced "Islam," which is what I wrote, with "ISIS," and therein lies the problem. You, like many others, are conflating the two, which is ignorant and dangerous.

In many ways, Christianity and Islam are similar, even today. It wasn't that long ago that a guy in Norway went apeshit in the name of Christianity (2011 if I remember correctly). Yeah, he was a loon, but again, people do crazy shite in the name of their faith. Just like there was a massive outcry over those killings by Christians, there are millions of Muslims, many of whom are in the U.S. and Europe, and many of whom are in the Middle East who condemn the acts of these ISIS extremists.

I don't think so. I simply think he's trying to show the American masses (mostly Christians) that we need to be careful with how we view Islam when we see the atrocities that are being carried out by ISIS.

Again, did he do a good job of getting his point across? Apparently not. Was the time to give that speech when he gave it? Probably not. But let's not engage in this rhetoric that the President is lumping Christians in with ISIS. That's just willful blindness.
