It's probably because LSU basketball has not been consistently good since the early 1990's. There were the exceptions in 2000 and 2006, but in reality, as a product, the basketball program has been mediocre, at best. This could be said for college basketball overall. Where are the great teams that you could see develop like the Duke teams of the 1990's with Grant Hill, Bobby Hurley and Laettner? When was the last time you saw a dominant big man in the college game ? Shaq? That was twenty plus years ago.
When Kevin Garnett and Kobe Bryant went straight from high school to the pros, college basketball became a second rate product. Think about it from an LSU perspective, anytime a really good big man emerges he's basically one - maybe two- and done. Stromile Swift did not emerge until his sophomore year and then he was gone. Tyrus Thomas comes out of nowhere in 2006 and by June, he was gone.
The people attending the games maybe go because there is nothing else better to do, or they remember the days when the PMAC was jumping with spectacular play and maybe the hope one day that same atmosphere will return.
