If it's in the context of their gameplan anyway, that's fine. I don't think you shift it to target a player if there's a chance he's just baiting you.

This is literally done all the time.
Hell, the Colts completely changed their defensive gameplan once they figured out Peyton couldn't hit the broadside of a barn deep.
