re: is hiphop or rap really music?

This is clearly a post made by someone that has never actually listened to rap music or been openminded enough to actually see the craft that goes into making good rap music.
I'll give anybody that the radio crap is just that, crap but the really good rap is really good from an artistic perspective.
Sure most rap beats are electronic but those sounds you hear still have to be put together to make it sound cohesive and good. Those machines don't just magically put out the beats you hear. A person who has a good ear for rhythm and sound puts a bunch of sounds together and make an artistic sound. For those that think its so easy, go try it. You can download programs to make beats and I guarantee you most of the people saying its not art couldn't put together a good beat using "machines". It still takes an artist to put together those sounds and make it sound good.
The complaining about sampling is just stupid. 99% of sampling is just one small piece of the original used as the main focus of a beat and then built around to completely change the sound of the original. Its not like they take an old song and just rap over the instrumental. Also without that sampling, some of the artists sampling wouldn't make any money off that song. They do get paid for the samples(most of the time). Sometimes the sample reinvigorates that particular song and brings it back into the limelight. Its a positive for the original.
As for the lyrics, the best rappers and lyricists are definitely artists. Much more technical and better with words than most of the rock that is considered classic or great lyricism. Rappers use infinitely more words in their lyrics, while at the same time rhyming words and syllables. Add in the well timed and well thought out hook that sells the sing and in the end you have art. I get that there are many, many basic and unoriginal rappers that bring down the whole art form(the best and most original rappers discuss this all the time). Quite simply, most of the rap that is popular or that sells is a dumbed down version of real rap. The good rappers and lyricists are far from dumb or unintelligent. Tell Jay Z he's dumb. You know what he'll tell you? Go take a look at my bank account. The guy is no dummy. His fortune was built on this non art form or non music that some of you claim.
No one that has actually listened to Dark Twisted Fantasy can say that isn't music.
Also on many top albums lists for 2014 the top album(top 5 at least on most) is a rap record. Run the Jewels part 2. Nothing dumb or non music about that album. Obviously people that judge music for a living believe its music

Rap is not music.
It's all beats that are made from some computer software with people with no grasp of the English language rapping over them.
I'm sorry but any song that uses ni**** isn't music, why listen to something that uses that word amongst "bitch" and "hoe" and talks abt making girls swallow and shite like that? That's just noise and stupid shite for the masses who don't have the intellect to appreciate what real music is.
Rap and hip hop is not music, it's noise.
No feeling, no skill, no real talent translatable to a stage. Most can't play instruments, it's all trash
8/10
bravo

Yes, complex guitar music takes much longer and more skill to execute than complex beats. The Cpu does a lot of work for you. That doesn't mean the electronic musician can't be as creative.
I'm guessing that you are a little biased because you probably play guitar. You are implying that mastering something that requires motor skills is inherently more complex than mastering something that requires creativity alone. I'd argue that the guitar is incredibly limited in what it can do when compared to a computer. You can't really "master" what you can do with a computer because there really are no limits. You can't honestly say that guitar takes more skill and ignore those facts. That's like saying a man who builds log cabins for a living is more skilled than a guy who designs skyscrapers. Those log cabins are badass and took great craftsmanship to build, but that skyscraper did too, even though guy #2 didn't build it with his hands. You are comparing things that shouldn't be compared.

No Prince Paul? :shakes head:
Decent list but I would replace a few and add Dan the Automator, NuMark, and I know I'm forgetting someone.

9 & 10 could be changed out with a few different producers. No way I could make a Top 10 list without 1-8 tho

These types of convos are great, makes you listen to stuff not in your regular rotation. Fwiw, I would put Prince Paul's work from 25 to 30 years ago up against any modern day producer as well. the lovage stuff and handsome boy modeling school are all very cool, but early work with de la Soul is unreal. he also pretty much created one of the guys on your list.

you might be saying that to be funny, but you're spot on.

Kid Koala.
One of the things that I don't think people understand about good DJs/Producers is the level of musical knowledge these guys have. I mean, the original sound of NYC hiphop delved heavily into krautrock. Let that sink in for a bit: a bunch of brothers from NYC digging through album stacks, selecting crap like Can and Kraftwerk, then going home and listening to it.
Not only do good producers need to understand the mechanics of good music and have the technical skills to merge divergent elements into a unified whole, but they need an encyclopedic knowledge of music in order to find the source material.... assuming we're talking about sampling here.

I got to see Kid Koala in a Virgin records in Paris around 2000, 2001. He was one of the coolest DJs I have ever heard live. just amazing skill- so many different textures and influences- guy plays the turntable as well as anyone plays a guitar

And jeebus, how could i forget dj krush? Ex yakuza, my second favorite hip hop producer, but a lot of the stuff with traditional Japanese sounds and piano are amazing as well. spend some time with his catalog if you haven't.

You're entitled to your own Top 10

that whole Mo Wax label back then- nice stuff.
I loved Rob Swift and Walkin' Large too- just trying to think of any other stuff that is hard to argue that it "isn't music"

Oh, yeah, no doubt. As far as kid koala, ninja tunes had some talent for a minute. That zen collection from around 2000 was great.

Ninja Tune was amaze balls back then
