My guess is it was set out to be a tribute movie to this guy. Maybe some other stuff too?
I thought the movie was well done, it shows the effects of guys going overseas to fight for a long time. But as far as being entertained and enjoying the movie simply as a movie, it wasn't great in that part.
To put it simply, I never felt like Kyle was in true danger, other than the last part of the movie. They resolved conflict to fast and it never felt like that conflict could lead to destruction. (aka divorce, serious injury, death)
