Well, of all the countries in the world Japan probably has the most karmic payback due for shitty treatment of prisoners.

The U.S. Continental Army looked like they'd looted a rummage sale and (with a bit of Frenchy help) they beat some forces of the strongest nation on Earth at the time. The North Vietnamese foot soldiers were ultimately victorious in third-world sandals and cheap Chinese tennis shoes over the Frenchies and the U.S..

Clothing (and matérial) alone do not make the army.
