Once you enroll in college classes you are given 5 years to play collegiate sports. You can only participate in 4 of those years. So if you are in college for 3 years, and played a college sport for all 3 of those years (by play I mean, actually stepped on the field and did not red shirt), that leaves you with just 1 year remaining.

Only exception would be to be granted a 6th year by the NCAA, which only happens in cases where a student has already used a red-shirt and gets injured for an entire season and can not play. They are sometimes granted a 6th year to be able to play.

This isn't the case with Miller. He played 3 years at Ohio State, and basically used a red-shirt as his 4th year this season. So, he's on season number 5, with 3 seasons played. Only way for him to play next year is for injury to occur, which causes him to miss an entire football season and he could possibly be granted that 6th year to play his 4th.
