I'm not buying this excuse.
At least for college football (as opposed to basketball), you know you'll have a guy for 3 years. If a guy redshirts, he may only play 2 years, but at least coaches know the timeline and can plan their recruiting accordingly.
Does it hurt? Of course, but good coaches have to anticipate it.
