the sport needs better teachers (coaches) at the grassroots level. fundamentals such as using both hands, passing/catching w/ both hands, blocking out, rebounding and its importance,defensive principles, footwork, basic p&r screening, etc. should be taught in the 7-10 year old range.
make sure the kids know the basics by the time they get to high school. the best coach i played for was in HS and every monday was 'back to basics' practice where we would hammer those fundamentals and our basic half court sets.
it comes down to teaching, AAU is an outlet for some kids, for some its a summer thing and for others its the big show and love it or hate it the colleges will be watching. a lot depends on location as well.
