White from Scotland. Correct me if I'm wrong but hasn't only one Bond actor fulfilled both of those qualifiers?
I'd support Elba having a turn as Bond but I'm a big Elba fan.

So I'm admittedly a pretty casual Bond fan, so I'm curious as to the thoughts from someone that's more hardcore than I am. Is there anything specifically written that suggests it shouldn't be an European white male? I only ask because it'd be like having a black guy play Jon Snow when he's pretty clearly written as a white guy with dark hair (and physical attributes plays quite a bit into the series). I can get that criticism (and we all know Rush is just baiting people so I'll just ignore his opinion).
And are we taking into consideration that Fleming's source material is primarily from the 50s-60s so it's possible that the character can evolve from what he wrote at that point?

If it's gonna be a black dude I think it should be Chiwetel Ejiofor (born and raised in London).
The defining trait of James Bond is that he is British. The question is, can a black guy be this character. If the story is set in the 50s/60s, the answer would be no. If it's set in modern times, then I think yes. A real spy blends in, and I think a white guy (in a white-majority society) would best fill that type of role. But James Bond is flamboyant, so being a minority doesn't matter.
Interestingly, Bond's background was described as half-Scottish only after Sean Connery played him in a movie. Otherwise I think he just would have been English.
