[how many] politicians have stepped up a spoken on behalf of the slain officers family?

Well the two in your title have, to say the least.

This is a terrible tragedy for those officers, their families, their friends and colleagues, and our national dialogue.

It hasn't, however, bought police officers the right to escape public scrutiny. Officers in this country are trained, sworn, and armed at the public's expense, and given the awesome responsibility of enforcing the law, maintaining the peace, and protecting the innocent among a population of nominally free people. It is an enormous task. I appreciate that no one is perfect, and that none of us is perfect at his job. But when you or your fellow officers "make mistakes", it could very well mean depriving a citizen of his rights, his property, or his life.

No society that a self-described "conservative" would want to live in will take those mistakes lightly.

It's not something to take lightly.
