Posted by hogfly What is the point of comparison between Spoon and Modest Mouse? They're very different bands. That's like comparing the Flaming Lips with Wilco, to me.
Can you name me another band that was responsible for pioneering and creating indie rock in the 90s? Didnt think so
Their early albums are similar.

What does "pioneering indie rock" even mean?

Spoon didn't pioneer indie rock. I mean, neither did Modest Mouse. Hell, neither did the Pixies.
I can see the rest of your argument that Spoon has consistently put out good albums for a decade (though I disagree they are peaking now) while Modest Mouse has done nothing over this same time frame. But giving credit to Spoon for indie rock is a bridge too far.
Spoon is the spiritual heir to Pavement, who was the American version of the Fall. They are a very good band, and I like them a lot, but I wouldn't exactly call them a genre defining, ground-breaking act. They are a more mainstream version of a lo-fi band. I happen to love lo-fi, so I really like Spoon because they borrow heavily from that sound.

indie rock in the 90's, I think of pavement, built to spill, guided by voices, dismemberment plan, sunny day real estate...
