Wine aficionados: What's the deal with with wine expiring/does it expire?

What's the deal with wine and expiration dates? To the best of my understanding, some wines can continue aging in the bottle and some can't and actually expire, but that's the extent of what I know about it. Say you're in a store and you find a bottle of wine from year 2005. Is that bottle good to drink, or is it bad, or could it be either? How can you tell?
Thank you & excuse my ignorance!

I don't THINK good wine goes bad, if it's properly sealed and stored.

Some wines are meant to age if stored properly, some are meant to be consumed young. Just remember that the year on the label is not the expiration date. Open it now and taste it. If it is good, drink it. If not, dump it out. What kind is it?
