So head to head doesn't matter. Until it matters. Say Oregon completely outplays Bama in the playoffs. Double the yardage, time of possession and just clearly the dominant team. But they get a tipped ball pick 6. A TD called back on a bogus penalty and fumble twice inside the 10 before losing by 1 point. Can Oregon go on the the championship? It's not head to head that counts, it's the better team. Until it isn't. If head to head counts in the playoffs it should count in the regular season as well.
