I went 2 years ago and used San Juan as base of operations, so I don't have specifics on where to stay... however I'd look for something in the corner of the island near Fajardo/Luquillo. Seemed to have some beaches but more importantly, was nearby the rainforest.

El Yunque is legit.

You can get anywhere within a couple hours though. Cabo Rojo was cool but that's away from the rainforests.

Definitely try the roasted/bbq'd pork down there. Some cool places in the hills along route 52 that'll make you feel like a local.

Was there last Christmas - Luquillo is trashy (lived there 25 years ago when Rosy Roads was still there and was seriously dissappointed going back). Vieques is awesome, however. Not much night life, but beaches, snorkeling, diving, fishing....some great resorts...I'd go back there in a minute. There are a couple of nice resorts in Fajardo area. Either San Juan or Fajardo, not more than an hour or so from El Yunque....

I was there for 2 1/2 months last year and stayed in the Courtyard by Marriott next to Rafael Hernandez Airport in Aguadilla. Aguadilla is a nice decent sized town on the NW corner of the island. I was 2 hours from San Juan, an hour from the Arecibo Telescope located in the rainforest, and there are many secluded beaches within 45 minutes.

As said above El yunque is pretty awesome. Also we went to a beach that you had to take a boat too and went snorkeling. It was the most beautiful beach I've ever seen and I've seen my fair share. I think it flamenco beach or something?
