My Cajun ancestors came here from Nova Scotia. They did not speak English. But that was before La. was part of the U.S. so the laws didn't apply to them.
My Cajun grandmother married my Spanish grandfather. She spoke 90% French and 10% English. He spoke 90% Spanish and 10% English. So, they could only communicate in English.
They raised my mom to speak French and English but absolutely no Spanish was allowed. Why? Because grandma was a bitch.
