This is completely laughable.

Saban was well respected as the next up and comer. It's the reason LSU signed him to the 3rd highest CFB HC salary at the time without setting foot on campus.

We signed him to a big contract because we had to lure him away from Mich St, who was trying to sign him once they found out that LSU and Saban had mutual interest in each other.

In 1995, Mich St went 6-5-1, 1996 they went 6-6, 1997 they went 7-5, 1998 they went 6-6, and 1999 they went 9-2. So before the 1999 season, Saban had a 52% winning percentage in the first 4 seasons at Mich St.

People knew he was an NFL guy and learned under Belichick, but he was not a big name head coach prior to LSU.
