I'm a GC we run a skid steer just about all the time. I would never want to own one, but everyone's circumstances are different
The good folks at the rental place take care of us and when it breaks (and it will) one call gets a replacement on the jobsite
As far as rental fees vs purchase price we probably have spent more, but I have no doubt we are way ahead when you add in repairs and maintenance

Equipment rental employees are sometimes grouped in with car salesmen. The difference is usually there are a lot of players in town on the equipment side. Most places offer the same exact units (unless your cat rental). We try to differentiate by establishing trust, dependability, and service. Also, most people who rent own businesses. If you own a construction business, 9 times out 10, you own or rent multiple units. Bad business to shaft someone on a one time deal when you likely would have a chance to establish a long term relationship and do business for a long period of time.
Martini- I agree with you. If your business depends on your equipment to run satisfactorily, it's smart to purchase from someone that you know will be Johnny on the spot for a repair or replacement

after research it skid steers seem to be like a boat or a mistress much cheaper to rent than to own, it would be for moving logs off site and to a trailer then off loading them to a mill, and I can prob accomplish what i need to with a grapple on a trailer.
i think i am going to rent on as needed basis
thanks for your insight guys.

I am in the diesel field and I can tell you that you need someone who knows both diesels and hydraulics to be around. Do not listen to the salesman. All it takes is one part to be messed up and it will cost you thousands.
