I find that black people are more laid back and way easier to approach for random "shoot-the-shite" conversation.

I'm starting to think this too. I can strike up a convo with a black person much easier and feel less awkward talking to them for some reason. Idk I guess it's strange to me because many of my white friends feel the exact opposite and normally only hang with people of our own race.
