See, I think that would clear some things up. Now you don't have a team up there based on what they did last year anymore. They are being put there because of them being there at the beginning of the year. They lose and they are out. No doubt

They win out, and they're a 12-1 conference champion. They have just as much, if not more, of a chance than a 12-1 Big Ten champion.
They are the defending champs. If they win their conference, even with a loss, the committee will give them high consideration.
Also, a good chance a few other conferences spit out some 2-loss champions. Would they go over a 1-loss champion who just happens to be the defending national champion?
