I agree the timing was weird, but I think at this point it was probably important to show faith in Jones. Especially for recruiting purposes. I don't think anyone thinks Jones would leave on his own accord, and this gives him an opportunity to tell recruits he will be around the entire time they are in BR.

I can't find when his original contract was set to expire, but it would have probably been after 4-5 years so I'd imagine he had a couple years remaining.

maybe LSU thinks doing it now will prevent them from spending more on a raise at the end of the season
