Delay of game penalty

The delay of game call middle of fourth quarter is what cost this game. It killed what could have been the knock out drive for a TD and settled for a field goal. Detroit had thrown in the towel and they were running well. Gave them new life and held Saints to FG instead. could not understand why they didn't call time out.
