I know what you mean. You have to be on full alert when you hit the side streets. I've walked to my condo many nights looking behind my back. You just have to be prepared

No good reason to be above Bourbon after dark. It just gets worse and worse as you go away from the river there.
That was the last time, not in a combat zone, that I specifically went looking for my gun and said to myself, "You have no business being here" - I took a wrong turn in my car (thank goodness), in the early morning hours (again, thank goodness, shortly after dawn) and ended up on the other side of Rampart in an "apartment complex with significant street cred."
