There are only so many true PETE jobs out there with operators. But, there is a ton of experience across the spectrum of "oilfield jobs" that is being lost due to retirement. They are hiring engineering degrees to replace them even though it's not a traditional engineering role. I took the place of a guy with 20 years of field experience. They hired him because he had experience. They hired me because of the engineering degree. Still make good money.
And as to the 500k salary, I doubt three levels of management above me clears that. Maybe sniffs it with stock and bonuses. But that's a big maybe. I'm shooting for 150k at 7 years. 250 at 15 years. That's my goal for my base salary.
